From Publishers Weekly
This entertaining series opener takes place more than 1,000 years after events depicted in the Obsidian Trilogy. The city of Armethalieh is no longer ruled by mages, and High Magick itself is forgotten. Elves and dragons are known to exist, but live in distant lands and are never seen. Wielders of Wild Magic are extremely rare. Characters familiar from earlier books have become legends from a dim past. Then Tiercel Rolfort, the scholarly son of lower nobility, rediscovers High Magick. Beset with visions and physically weakening, Tiercel decides his best hope is to take a journey to find a Wild Mage. Meanwhile, Wild Mage Bisochim has become convinced of his calling to set the balance aright by bringing darkness back into the world. Having found and bonded with the dragon Saravasse, he plans to draw on her power to further his dark goals. This beguiling beginning promises a highly readable epic combining vivid characterization with an interesting exploration of how past heroics are twisted over centuries into something both more and less than they were. When the need arises, mages of various types appear--wild mages, high mages, and knight mages, to name a few. In this first book of a new trilogy, young Tiercel is trying to make sense of his dreams. He sets out with his best friend, Harrier, in hopes of finding a wild mage who can help him. William DufrisÕs rich narration ranges from nonchalance to quiet anxiety as Tyr is thwarted at every turn. Dufris also conveys HarrierÕs edgy vigilance as he looks out for his friend. DufrisÕs nuanced characterizations, especially of Harrier and Tyr, capture their uncertainty as well as their conviction that they must find their destiny. Reader Reviews
This review is from: The Phoenix Unchained (Enduring Flame, Book 1) (Hardcover)
The Phoenix Unchained (2007) is the first fantasy novel of The Enduring Flame series. The story is set over a millennia after When Darkness Falls of the Obsidian trilogy. In the previous volume, Idalia Wildmage was remembered in a ceremony by the Elves and many guests. Lycaelon Tavadon spoke of her as his daughter and then as a tragic hero to all the land. Kellen was surprised that his father had even come to the ceremony and much more at the praise of his sister. A millennium has passed since the time of the Blessed Saint Idalia and her brother Kellen, the Poor Orphan Boy. All has been peaceful since the destruction of the Demons. Everything is in Balance. In this novel, it is Kindling and Harrier Gillain is ready to celebrate. As the last son of the Portmaster of Armerhalieh, he is his father's heir for the position of Portmaster. His next older brother Brelt had been the heir before Harrier had been unexpectedly born late in the life of his mother Divigana. Although Harrier likes his duties, he feels that Brelt would make a better Portmaster than himself. Tiercel Rolfort is the eldest son of a minor noble and seldom awakes as early as the Gillain household. So Harrier waits a Bell or two before going to the Rolfort house. As he expects, the Rolforts have only been up a short time and offer him a second breakfast when he arrives. Harrier can always eat more food. Harrier and Tiercel have been companions and friends since the day that Harrier saved Tiercel from falling off a pier in the harbor. Since Harrier is the elder of the two, he has continued to save Tiercel from physical danger. But Tiercel is the one who talks them out of trouble. Their life is pretty well determined by now. Harrier will be entering his apprenticeship very soon and Tiercel will be entering the University. They will go their separate ways and will see very little of each other. Then Harrier's Uncle Alfrin Auvalen returns to the city after a long absence and presents Harrier with a book on his Naming Day. Since Harrier is not much interested in reading books, Tiercel offers to read it for him and present him with a summary. Then Tiercel gets interested in the ancient history and particularly the parts about the High Mages. Tiercel had never heard or read anything about High Mages, but one night he sets his bedroom on fire trying to cast a spell. Then he starts having vivid dreams about a woman of fire. In this story, Tiercel is a budding High Mage, the first in over a thousand years. He feels terrible and remembers that those with the High Mage talent must find a mentor or die. He tells most of his story to Healers and Preceptors of the Light, but all have other explanations for his problems. None will believe him, much less help him. Meanwhile, Harrier doesn't believe in High Magic, even when Tiercel lights a candle through a few words and passes. Harrier only believes in concrete things that he can touch and taste. Magic is for Wildmages with the three books. So Tiercel sets off to find a Wildmage. He has been told that he has prior experience with a Wildmage in Sentarshadeen and he determines to go there. Harrier always goes with Tiercel to keep him out of trouble, so naturally Harrier insists on going with him on this quest. They venture out the Delfier Gate and down the highway. Soon they grow tired of dodging carts and wagons, consult their maps and then take the War Road instead. Their new way is a beaten path paralleling the Delfier Highway, but lacks wheeled traffic. They are confronted by three ruffians on the War Road. Tiercel tries to convince the men to take a few blankets and some food, but they want his money. Of course, Harrier considers Tiercel to be an idiot and tries to intervene, but he is only one young man. Suddenly, a flurry of stones flies out of the underbrush and drives away the ruffians. Then a young Centaur emerges and introduces herself as Simera. She is a Student Forester on her wandering year, getting to know the forests and learning to survive in them. Simera is also heading toward Sentarshadeen and offers to guide them to the city. Tiercel and Harriet tell her everything -- much more that he has told anyone else -- and Tiercel demonstrates his ability to call fire. Simera agrees that he needs a Wildmage. In the Madiran Desert, far away, a Wildmage called Bisochim feels that the Balance is not quite right. He leaves his tribe and wanders between the Sands and Stars searching for an answer. He eventually finds a shrine in the harshest part of the desert and encounters a woman of fire standing on a fiery lake. This story has Tiercel discovering evidence of the return of Darkness. Now someone or something is trying to kill him. He is nearly frozen to death at the Three Trees inn and escapes only by setting the stable on fire. He decides to camp out in the wilds so as to not endanger any more people. Since this is the first volume of a new trilogy (or more), Tiercel doesn't find an answer to his problems. He does encounter Wildmages, Elves and Dragons -- not to mention fauns and other creatures -- but he still has his mostly untrained talent. Enjoy! Highly recommended for Lackey & Mallory fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of magical quests, sincere villains, and true love. -Arthur W. Jordin
