I have been an avid fan of Laurell K. Hamilton's "Anita Blake" and "Meredith Gentry" series from the start. Her earlier writings were the type that made you slow down your reading at the end so you could make the book last (or stay up till the wee hours finishing the book in one sitting). As her books progressed from what I call "lusty love novels" more into the realm of "soft erotica" I still continued both series and still enjoyed them. The last couple of books of each series pretty much moved into the "hard erotica" category and the pleasure of reading them and falling into Anita's and Meredith's lives was just not there. There was a general outcry of disappointment from Ms. Hamilton's fans. I don't know if she heeded it - or if her writing is just going round full circle. But "A Lick of Frost" reminds me of her writing style in her first books. There's still the "lusty love" with just a touch of "soft erotica" but there's also a superb story line that begins to tie Meredith and the faerie realm together in a fantastic manner. It's not just about the sex in this book. I am back to reading slowly towards the end of the book so I can make it last - and I am very much looking forward once again to the next chapter in Meredith's life.
