    From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. John Bedford Lloyd's rich, distinctive voice brings a strong sense of power to his reading of Box's first stand-alone thriller. In the rural Idaho town of Kootenai Bay, 12-year-old Annie Taylor and her younger brother, William, witness a brutal murder. Immediately the two find themselves being hunted by killers who will stop at nothing to ensure the children's silence. The two find refuge with an old rancher, Jess Rawlins, and recently retired police detective Eduardo Villatoro. Together, the two men make a desperate stand against the murderers despite being outnumbered and outgunned. Lloyd's crisp, laconic delivery easily handles a multitude of characters, accents and shifting points of view, creating just the right tone for the material and drawing the listener deep into the action of the story. He portrays his villains (a band of dirty ex-cops) with just the right amount of ruthless menace without going overboard, and he perfectly captures the essence of the aging rancher, imbuing him with the quiet strength and dignity of an iconic western hero.

There's an almost overwhelming number of characters in this stand-alone from the author of the Joe Pickett series, and John Bedford Lloyd depicts them all proficiently. Whether he's mimicking the town gossip, the tight-lipped hero, the villains, or the two children on the run, Lloyd's rich voice and terse delivery generate almost too much excitement. A 12-year-old girl and her younger brother, having witnessed a murder, are in the woods of northern Idaho, being sought by the killers and the police. For the 48 hours over which the story takes place, Lloyd keeps the children slightly ahead of their pursuers, and the listener right behind them. This review is from: Blue Heaven (Hardcover) Young Annie and William Taylor are surprised when the UPS man, Tom, joins them at the breakfast table. After he leaves, Annie and her Mom have harsh words. Monica had promised her kids no men unless they are going to be their new Daddy. When Tom doesn't show up after school to take the two kids fishing, they decide to take Tom's gear and go on their own. The pair go on the run when they witness four men shooting another. The next day, Eduardo Villatoro arrives in town. The retired Santa Anita, CA cop is checking into the local bank because some money from a 13M racetrack robbery has shown up at the local bank. After 8 years and retirement, he's still trying to solve the case. The four shooters, who happen to be retired LA cops, quickly take over the missing children case from a befuddled local Sheriff. If they can find the kids first, they'll take care of them--for good. And Villatoro won't be a problem, either. "Blue Heaven" definitely gets off to a strong start. Children as witness storylines are always a grabber for many readers. You're pulling for the good guys all the way through. Also, the premise that so much lawlessness happens in a community that's become a hot retirement spot for LA cops is also a grabber. The problem is, there are some slow patches in the narrative due to reminiscences and partial detours that last a little longer than necessary. * Note: One star deduction for some of the poorest print quality I've seen in a hardcover novel. The type was uneven and blotchy, making the book difficult to read.  Comments (7) | Permalink |  (Report this)
