This first installment in the Sisters of Holmes County series is more of the same for Brunstetter, who has more than a million of her Amish-themed novels in print. Grace Hostettler is settling down to a conventional Amish life and marriage to a kind young man in her community. But when a stranger from her past shows up, she's forced to acknowledge the "English" life and family she left behind during her rowdy adolescent rumschpringe period. Will her new husband accept her when the secret of her past comes tumbling out? Unfortunately, technical problems mar this novel about second chances. Grace is a weak and uninteresting protagonist who is more an observer of the action than its leading lady. While Brunstetter's fans will no doubt appreciate the novel's loving—even hagiographic—portrait of the Amish, the Amish characters' dialogue often feels stilted and unnatural, impeded rather than enhanced by awkward sprinklings of Pennsylvania Dutch. Stock English characters, such as an intrusive reporter and an aggressive developer who wants to buy up Amish land, add little to the story. (July)

This review is from: A Sister's Secret (Sisters of Holmes County, Book 1) (Hardcover) Grace, the young Amish woman around whom this book centers, has completed her wild years and is now back at home and been baptized and joined her family's deep rooted Amish faith church. Her Amish fiance is just waiting for their wedding day, not knowing anything that she is carefully hiding from everyone, including her sister and parents. When a young man she dated briefly during her wild years shows up in her little Amish town, she is understandably worried and wants him to leave. However, dangerous gags and damaging acts are taking place in her parent's home and shop as well as her fiance's, and she is positive that Gary is the culprit although she has no proof. The main throught running throughout the book was a bit unbelievable, the fact that Grace would even think for a moment that she could forever hide the activities she experienced during the years she was away for the Amish community. I felt the book dragged a bit, was a bit on the shallow side, but knowing the history of the author compelled me to read it and the sequel when it comes out. I felt Grace was not treated fairly by some of the people in her life, and there was no closure to the story. I finished the book feeling very dissatisfied with the lack of a known outcome.
